Cannabis bath fizzies: the short answer
Cannabis bath fizzies are bath bombs that carry CBD, THC, or both. They fizz when sodium bicarbonate reacts with citric acid in water. The cannabinoids sit in the tub as oil droplets. Skin absorbs a small share. Most of the dose goes down the drain.
Cannabis Bath Bombs for Inflammation: A Practical Guide
What is in the tub
- Sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. These two make the fizz. A 100 g bomb releases about 20 g of carbon dioxide.
- Carrier oils or butters. Cannabinoids dissolve in fat, not water. MCT oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter carry them.
- Cannabinoid extract. CBD isolate, broad-spectrum distillate, or full-spectrum oil. THC content runs from 0 mg to 100 mg per bomb in states with legal cannabis.
- Fragrance, colorants, and polysorbate 80. The surfactant breaks oil into small drops so they do not float on top.
How much crosses the skin
Human skin has an outer layer called the stratum corneum. It blocks water-soluble molecules and most large ones. CBD and THC have a molecular weight of 314.46 g/mol. That number sits under the 500 g/mol rule of thumb for skin penetration. Their problem is the opposite: they do not mix with water, so they stay in the oil film on the surface.
Published work on transdermal cannabinoids uses ethanol, propylene glycol, or terpenes as penetration enhancers. A bath bomb has none of those at effective levels. Hair follicles and sweat glands offer small bypass routes. Absorption from bathwater is low. No standard dose exists.
What the evidence covers
Clinical trials on CBD use oral solutions and gels under medical supervision. Bath products are cosmetics in the United States, not drugs. FDA has approved one CBD drug, Epidiolex, for seizures. It has approved no CBD bath product for any condition.
Label claims about pain, anxiety, or sleep have no trial data behind them for this route of use. A warm bath itself eases muscle soreness and stress. That effect appears with plain Epsom salt and water.
Label checks
- Look for a batch number and a lot lookup code.
- Read the certificate of analysis. Check cannabinoid potency and pass results for pesticides, heavy metals, microbials, and residual solvents.
- Compare milligrams to price. A 100 mg CBD bomb at $12 costs $0.12 per milligram.
- Note the THC figure. A 10 mg THC bomb can show up on a urine screen.
Safe use
Patch test on the inner arm for 24 hours. Stop if redness or itching appears. Fragrance and essential oils cause most reactions, not cannabinoids. Skip the product on broken skin. Keep water below 104 F. Store bombs in a sealed container. Humidity starts the fizz before the tub.
