Answer first

Recovery from cannabis dependency, clinically called cannabis use disorder, usually combines a clear quit plan with behavioral support. Mild cases often respond to self-directed steps: tracking use, setting a quit date, and managing withdrawal. Daily or near-daily use, prior failed quit attempts, or co-occurring anxiety, depression, or sleep problems call for a clinician. No medication is approved for cannabis use disorder in the US; counseling is the main evidence-based treatment.

Prerequisites

  • Pick a quit date within the next 7 to 14 days.
  • Remove flower, vapes, edibles, and paraphernalia from your home and car.
  • Tell one person who will check in on you.
  • Write down your reasons for stopping.
  • Screen yourself for depression, anxiety, and sleep problems, then raise them with a clinician.

Steps

  1. Track every use for 7 days. Record time, amount, trigger, and mood in a notes app.
  2. Review the log with your triggers marked. Identify the top three situations that precede use.
  3. Set a quit date and choose a stop method: abrupt stop or a 1 to 2 week taper. Write the date down.
  4. Prepare for withdrawal during days 1 to 14. Expect irritability, insomnia, decreased appetite, and cravings. Plan water, meals, and sleep hygiene.
  5. Replace one trigger with a fixed action. For example, walk for 10 minutes after dinner instead of vaping.
  6. Book a cognitive behavioral therapy or motivational enhancement therapy session. Ask about outpatient programs if cost is a barrier.
  7. Set a daily craving plan. Name three actions you will take when a craving hits, such as drinking water, texting your support person, or leaving the room.
  8. Review progress at day 14 and day 30. Adjust the plan if cravings are still intense.

Where CBD fits, and where it does not

CBD is not an approved treatment for cannabis use disorder, and current evidence does not show that it prevents relapse. Do not swap one cannabis product for another and call it recovery. If you already use CBD for other reasons, choose products with a current third-party lab test and tell your clinician. Keep CBD use separate from your quit plan so you can measure progress without a new variable.

When to seek urgent care

Contact a clinician or crisis line if you have suicidal thoughts, severe vomiting, chest pain, or withdrawal that makes it impossible to eat or sleep for more than two days. Heavy daily use combined with mental health symptoms warrants a medical evaluation before you stop.
