Short answer
CBG (cannabigerol) has shown effects in lab dishes and in animals. Human trials are few and small. No large controlled trial has shown that CBG treats a disease in people. Label claims about pain, anxiety, or sleep rest on animal data and user reports, not clinical trials.
What CBG is
CBG starts as CBGA, an acid the plant makes first. Enzymes convert CBGA into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA. What stays behind is CBG. Most hemp cultivars hold less than 1% CBG by dry weight. Growers now plant cultivars bred for CBG that reach 10% to 15%.
CBG vs CBD: A Comprehensive Comparison Review
CBG does not cause intoxication. It binds weakly to CB1 and CB2 receptors, the two main cannabinoid receptors. Lab work points to other targets, including TRP channels and the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor.
What studies show
Inflammation
Mice with induced colitis that received CBG had less colon inflammation than control mice. The doses were higher than a person gets from a tincture. No human colitis trial has been published.
Eye pressure
One study in cats and one in mice found CBG lowered intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is the target condition. Human data is absent.
Bacteria
In lab dishes, CBG stopped growth of MRSA, a drug-resistant staph strain. The work used isolated CBG on cultured bacteria. It has not been tested as an infection treatment in people.
Appetite
Rats given CBG ate more than control rats in a study of appetite loss. This is a single animal study.
Nerve cells
In mouse models of Huntington's disease, CBG slowed some markers of nerve cell damage. Mouse results do not carry over to people without a trial.
Human evidence
Published human studies on CBG have measured safety and tolerability, not symptom relief. Sample sizes run in the dozens. A trial in adults with anxiety is under way; results are pending. A citation to "clinical proof" for CBG is a citation to something other than a completed trial.
Side effects and drug interactions
Small human studies have not reported serious adverse events. Common cannabinoid side effects include dry mouth and drowsiness. Long-term data on CBG is missing.
Lab tests show cannabinoids can block cytochrome P450 enzymes, which process many prescription drugs. CBD does this. Human data on CBG is not available. Ask a pharmacist before combining CBG with a prescription drug.
Legal status in the US
Hemp-derived CBG with 0.3% THC or less by dry weight is legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. Some states restrict cannabinoid products by name or by total THC. The FDA has not approved CBG as a drug or as a food ingredient.
How to check a CBG product
- Look for a batch number and a certificate of analysis from an ISO 17025 lab.
- Divide the listed CBG milligrams by the number of doses in the bottle to get milligrams per dose.
- Read the THC result, not just the label claim.
- Compare price per milligram. CBG costs more than CBD because plants yield less of it.
Bottom line
CBG is a real cannabinoid with lab data behind several possible uses. The gap between that data and a proven benefit in people is large. Buy from a seller that posts third-party test results, and tell your doctor if you take prescription drugs.
