What a cone is

A cone is a pre-shaped paper sleeve for smoking flower. It is wider at the top and narrow at the mouth end, and it usually has a paper tip or a cardboard filter. In a CBD store, cone refers to the paper, not to a CBD product. You fill the cone with ground hemp flower. The cone shape gives you a pre-roll with a tapered burn and a built-in mouthpiece. A good cone holds its shape, seals at the seam, and fits the amount of flower you plan to use.

CBD pre-roll cones come in sizes from short singles to large party cones. Smaller cones suit a quick session. Larger cones hold more flower and need a slower, more even pack. Use food-grade paper and a clean work surface. Buy hemp flower from a seller that posts batch lab tests for cannabinoids and contaminants.

Before you start

  • Ground CBD hemp flower, broken into small pieces
  • One pre-rolled cone with a filter tip
  • A small funnel or a folded card
  • A packing tool, such as a wooden dowel or the cone package tamper
  • A clean, dry tray

Check your local rules for hemp and CBD sales before you buy or carry flower. Federal hemp rules do not replace state or local rules.

How to fill a CBD pre-roll cone

  1. Set the cone upright in a stable holder or cup.
  2. Break the hemp flower into pieces about the size of a grain of rice.
  3. Place a small funnel over the open end of the cone.
  4. Spoon flower into the funnel in small amounts.
  5. Tap the side of the cone to settle the flower.
  6. Press the flower down with the packing tool.
  7. Add more flower in small amounts.
  8. Press again after each addition.
  9. Stop when the flower reaches the base of the twist.
  10. Leave a small gap at the top so you can close the paper.
  11. Pinch the open paper edges together.
  12. Twist the top closed with light pressure.
  13. Check the seam for loose flower.
  14. Store the filled cone in a dry, smell-proof container until use.

How to choose a cone

  • Size: A 1 1/4 cone holds a short session. A king-size cone holds more flower and needs a looser pack.
  • Paper: Thin paper burns fast. Thicker paper burns slower. Both work if the cone is dry and sealed.
  • Filter: A paper filter keeps flower out of your mouth. A glass tip adds weight and heat resistance.
  • Seam: A tight seam prevents flower from spilling during the pack.

Common fixes

If the cone feels loose, add a small amount of flower and pack it again. If the draw feels tight, roll the cone between your fingers to loosen the pack. If the paper tears at the top, fold the tear closed or move the flower to a new cone. Do not overpack a cone. A dense pack restricts airflow and can make the burn uneven.

Storage and safety

Keep filled cones away from heat, direct sun, and moisture. Label the container with the date and the hemp batch. Keep CBD products out of reach of children and pets. Do not drive or operate equipment after use if you feel impaired. Talk with a health care provider before you use CBD if you take medicine or have a medical condition.
