Short answer

Baking soda cleans a bong as a mild abrasive and odor absorber. It does not dissolve resin. For light film and smell, use baking soda with white vinegar. For sticky resin, use baking soda with 91% isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt.

What baking soda does

Sodium bicarbonate is a water-soluble salt. The grains scrub soft film when you shake them against glass. The powder also absorbs odor. Resin is a mix of tar and plant matter that sticks to glass and resists water. Baking soda alone will not cut a thick resin ring. A solvent does that work.

Supplies

  • Baking soda, 2 to 4 tbsp
  • White vinegar, 1 cup, or 91% isopropyl alcohol, 1 cup
  • Coarse salt, 2 to 3 tbsp for the alcohol method
  • Hot tap water
  • Dish soap
  • Bottle brush or pipe cleaner
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Plugs or your hand for the openings

Method 1: baking soda and vinegar for light film

  1. Empty the bong into a trash bag, not the sink. Resin can clog drains.
  2. Rinse with hot tap water.
  3. Add 2 tbsp baking soda to the chamber.
  4. Pour in 1 cup white vinegar. The mix fizzes.
  5. Cover the mouthpiece and bowl hole. Shake for 30 seconds.
  6. Let it sit 10 minutes.
  7. Scrub the neck and hard spots with a brush.
  8. Rinse with hot tap water until the water runs clear.

The fizz comes from an acid-base reaction. It lifts loose film. The reaction leaves water and sodium acetate, so the cleaning power fades in about a minute. Repeat for a second pass if film remains.

Method 2: baking soda, alcohol, and salt for resin

  1. Add 2 tbsp baking soda and 3 tbsp coarse salt.
  2. Pour in 1 cup 91% isopropyl alcohol.
  3. Cover all openings. Shake for 60 seconds. Salt grains act as an abrasive; alcohol dissolves resin.
  4. Let it sit 15 minutes. Shake again.
  5. Pour the mix into a sealed container for disposal. Do not pour it down the drain.
  6. Rinse with hot tap water and dish soap. Scrub the tube and percolator.

Bowl and downstem

Soak the bowl and downstem in a cup with 1 tbsp baking soda and 1/2 cup alcohol for 15 minutes. Use a pipe cleaner on the stem. A paste of baking soda and water works on metal screens and glass screens.

Rinse and dry

Rinse with hot tap water three times. Soap residue and salt taste harsh. Shake out excess water and set the bong on a towel to air dry. Leave the bowl out so air moves through the neck.

Safety and limits

  • Do not use boiling water. Thermal shock can crack borosilicate glass.
  • Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Keep it away from lighters, stoves, and pilot lights. Work near an open window.
  • Do not use alcohol on acrylic or plastic bongs. It can cloud and crack the surface.
  • Never mix vinegar with bleach. The mix releases chlorine gas.
  • Baking soda does not sanitize glass. Use dish soap and hot water after the resin is gone.
