The short answer
Fill the base so the water sits about an inch above the slits in the downstem. Grind your material, pack a small bowl, seal your mouth on the mouthpiece, bring the flame to the edge of the bowl while you pull, then lift the bowl out and pull the whole hit in one breath. That is the entire loop. Everything below is about doing it without wasting material, scorching your throat, or leaving a mess behind.
What you need
- A bong with a removable bowl and downstem
- Water, cold if you want it smoother
- A grinder
- A lighter or hemp wick
- Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt for cleaning
Step by step
- Add water. Pour through the mouthpiece or the downstem opening and check the level. You want the bottom of the downstem submerged by roughly half an inch to an inch. More water means more drag and a higher chance of splashback into your mouth.
- Grind. A medium grind burns best. Too fine and it pulls through into the water, too coarse and it burns unevenly.
- Pack. Fill the bowl loosely, maybe three quarters full. A tight pack restricts airflow and forces you to pull harder than you need to.
- Pull and light. Put your mouth on the mouthpiece and start a slow, steady inhale. Hold the flame to the edge of the bowl, not the center. Let the ember spread on its own.
- Clear it. When the chamber is full of smoke, pull the bowl out and inhale the rest in one motion. Leaving the bowl in keeps the smoke stale and harsh.
- Exhale. Nothing fancy. Some people hold it in, but that mostly just gives the tar more time to settle in your lungs.
Water level and percolation
This is the part people get wrong most often. A bong with too little water hits hot and rough. Too much water and you get a mouthful of bong water, which tastes exactly as bad as you would expect. If your piece has a percolator, keep the level just above the perc holes. Ice in the neck helps if your bong has notches for it, but skip ice if the glass is thin, since thermal shock can crack it.
Where CBD fits
Plenty of people load CBD flower into a bong, and it behaves like any other dried flower. The ritual is the same, the packing is the same, and the water cools the smoke the same way. What does not work is CBD isolate, tincture, or oil. Oils do not combust cleanly, they coat the inside of the glass, and you lose most of what you paid for. If you want CBD without smoke, use a tincture, a capsule, or a dry herb vaporizer instead.
If you do buy CBD flower, look for a batch with a lab report that shows the cannabinoid content and a screen for pesticides and heavy metals. Lab testing matters more with smokable flower than with almost any other CBD product, because you are pulling everything in it straight into your lungs.
Cleaning
Dump the water after every session. Standing water grows things you do not want near your face, and old water makes every hit taste like a swamp. For a real clean, pour in isopropyl alcohol, add a spoonful of coarse salt, cover the openings, and shake for a minute. Rinse with hot water until you cannot smell alcohol. Do this weekly if you use it often.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Packing the bowl tight, then wondering why you cannot pull
- Holding a lighter to the bowl for ten seconds and torching the whole load
- Sharing a mouthpiece while you are sick, or sharing at all if you can avoid it
- Using a dirty piece and blaming the material for the harsh taste
A note on smoke
Smoking anything, cannabis or CBD flower included, exposes your lungs to irritants and combustion byproducts. Vaporizing at a controlled temperature produces fewer of them, though it is not risk free. If you have asthma, COPD, or any lung condition, talk to a clinician before you start. CBD on its own is generally well tolerated, but it can interact with prescription medications, so check with a pharmacist if you take anything daily.
Quick checklist
- Water above the downstem slits, not above the bowl
- Medium grind, loose pack
- Light the edge, pull slow, clear the chamber
- Fresh water every time, deep clean weekly
- Lab-tested flower only
