The fastest way to freshen dry cannabis flower is a two-way humidity pack. A 62% pack in a sealed jar raises moisture over 24 to 48 hours. The pack cannot push the flower past its set point, so mold risk is lower than with fruit peel or a damp towel.

Why dried flower loses moisture

Flower holds 10% to 12% water by weight at harvest. Water and terpenes leave the plant material through the air. Every time the jar opens, dry room air enters. Below 55% relative humidity inside the jar, flower crumbles and smell fades. A small hygrometer in the jar shows the number.

1. Two-way humidity packs

Boveda and Integra Boost sell packs rated 58%, 62%, and 72%. Most flower storage uses 62%. The pack releases water vapor when the jar is dry and absorbs vapor when the jar is wet. An 8-gram pack covers about 14 grams of flower. A 60-gram pack covers about 450 grams. Replace a pack when it turns stiff or crunchy. Packs hold their rating for 2 to 4 months in a jar that opens often.

2. Terracotta stone

Unglazed terracotta holds water. Soak a stone or a shard of a terracotta pot in water for 20 minutes. Dry the surface with a towel. Put the stone in the jar with the flower. Check the jar every 4 hours. Remove the stone when the stems bend instead of snap. Terracotta holds water for days, so mold risk is higher than with a humidity pack.

3. Fruit peel and bread

Citrus peel, apple slices, and bread release moisture in 2 to 8 hours. They also add sugars and oils. Those sugars feed mold. Citrus oil can cover the flower's own terpenes. Use peel for flower that will be used within a day. Remove the peel after 12 hours at most. Bread molds in 24 to 48 hours in a closed jar.

4. Damp paper towel and steam

A damp paper towel taped inside the lid, or a few seconds of steam, adds water fast. Both add too much. Water activity above 0.65 supports mold growth. Most flower carries mold spores. Once mold starts, the whole jar is a loss. Skip both methods.

What not to do

  • Do not put water drops on the flower.
  • Do not store flower in a plastic bag for weeks.
  • Do not keep jars in sunlight or above 77 F (25 C).
  • Do not mix dry flower with wet flower in one jar.

Storage after freshening

Move the flower to a glass jar with a metal lid. Keep it in a dark cabinet between 60 F and 70 F (15 C to 21 C). Open the jar for 5 minutes each day for the first three days. Growers call this burping. It releases gas and lets you check for mold. Leave a 62% pack in the jar. Flower stored this way keeps 6 to 12 months.

Signs of mold: white fuzz, gray patches, a musty smell. Throw out the jar contents if you see them.
