Pick first: cartridge plus a battery

A 510-thread cartridge with a rechargeable battery costs less per milligram of CBD than an all-in-one pen. The battery is a one-time purchase. A 1 mL cart holds about 1000 mg of oil. If the label states 500 mg CBD, divide the price by 500 to get cost per mg. Run that number on both products before you buy. A cart also lets you set voltage, and voltage matters for thick CBD oil.

An all-in-one pen wins in one case: a first purchase, or a trip where you carry nothing else. It has no threads to match and no charger to pack.

What the two words mean

A pen is a complete device: battery, chamber, and oil in one housing. Most models are disposable or rechargeable, and the oil is not replaceable.

cannabis pen or cart

A cart is an oil tank with a mouthpiece and a 510 thread, sold without a battery. You attach it to a battery you own. Most carts use the 510 thread. Some brands use magnetic adapters or proprietary pods.

Differences that change the purchase

  • Cost: the battery adds $15 to $30 once. Cartridges then cost less per mg than disposables at the same potency.
  • Waste: a disposable pen discards a battery and a circuit board with every unit. A cart discards the tank and coil.
  • Voltage: CBD oil is thick. Most carts run between 3.3 V and 3.8 V. A variable battery lets you drop to 3.3 V and cut clogging. Fixed pens run at one voltage.
  • Dose control: labels list fill volume in mL and total CBD in mg. Read both. No label states mg per puff.
  • Clogging: carts clog at the air intake when oil cools. A pen clogs at the same point with no way to swap the tank.
  • Compatibility: a 510 battery accepts most carts. A pod system accepts one brand.

Checklist before you pay

  1. A certificate of analysis (COA) searchable by batch number, not a brand landing page.
  2. Total CBD in mg and fill volume in mL printed on the label.
  3. No vitamin E acetate. CDC tied vitamin E acetate to the 2019 EVALI outbreak in THC carts. Avoid MCT oil and propylene glycol in a CBD cart where possible.
  4. Third-party tests for pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents.
  5. A battery with voltage settings and a 510 thread.

Options

  1. 510 cart plus a variable-voltage battery. Lowest cost per mg and the most control. Look for a range that covers 3.3 V to 4.2 V.
  2. All-in-one disposable pen. Simplest first try. Buy the smallest size.
  3. Pod system. Fewer leaks, one-brand lock-in.
  4. Refillable cart. Cheapest per mg, most handling steps, most risk of a bad fill.

Limits

FDA has not approved CBD as a dietary supplement or a food ingredient. Labels vary by brand and batch. No authority sets a standard dose for inhaled CBD. Absorption depends on draw length and coil temperature. Treat any mg-per-puff figure as an estimate.
