What pre-rolled cones are

A pre-rolled cone is rolling paper cut and shaped into a cone, with a filter tip set at the narrow end. The wide end stays open. You pack ground flower into the wide end, then twist or fold the top closed. The cone sets the paper thickness, the cone angle, and the draw. It removes the rolling step.

Cone sizes and fill weight

Size sets the payload. Fill weights below are for medium-ground flower packed to a firm draw. Loose fill drops each number by about 30%.

Best Marijuana Cones: High-Quality Options for CBD Store Customers

  • 70 mm: about 0.3 g. Single-wide paper. Common for short sessions.
  • 84 mm: about 0.5 g. The most common size sold in the US.
  • 98 mm: about 0.75 g. Sold as 1¼.
  • 109 mm to 110 mm: about 1 g. King size. Slim versions hold less.
  • 140 mm: about 2 g. Sold as large or party cones.

Fill weight is a target, not a limit. A 109 mm cone packed hard holds 1.3 g. Packed light, it holds 0.7 g and burns hot.

Paper type and paper weight

Paper weight is given in grams per square meter (gsm). Lighter paper burns faster and adds less paper taste. Heavier paper burns slower and holds more ash.

  • Rice paper: 12 to 14 gsm. Thin sheet. Light gray ash.
  • Hemp paper: 14 to 16 gsm. Rougher texture. Slower burn than rice.
  • Wood pulp, unbleached: 18 to 24 gsm. Brown sheet. Heavier draw.
  • Flax paper: 20 to 25 gsm. Used in some white papers.

Chlorine-bleached paper is white. Unbleached paper is tan to brown. The color does not change the fill weight. It changes the burn rate and the taste of the first few draws.

Filters and tips

Most cones ship with a cardboard crutch, 20 mm to 26 mm long. The crutch keeps flower out of your mouth and cools the smoke. Options at the narrow end:

  • Cardboard crutch: standard. Cheap. Soaks through on long sessions.
  • Cellulose acetate filter: traps some tar and particles. Blocks airflow more.
  • Ceramic or glass tip: reusable. Sold as a separate part.

How to fill a cone

  1. Grind flower to a medium cut. Fine powder clogs the draw. Whole buds leave air gaps.
  2. Set the cone upright in a cone loader or a cup.
  3. Scoop flower in small amounts and tap the cone on the table every few grams. Tapping settles the load.
  4. Stop 6 mm to 10 mm short of the rim.
  5. Twist the paper tip, or fold it flat, then press the fold against the side.

Storage

Paper takes on moisture from air. Cones stored above 65% relative humidity pull tight and draw poorly. Cones stored below 40% turn brittle and split at the twist. Keep cones in the sealed pack, in a dry box, away from direct sun. A pack opened and left out holds for about two weeks before the paper starts to soften.

Pre-rolled CBD products

A pre-rolled CBD joint is hemp flower packed into a cone. The cone holds no CBD. Read the label for net weight, total CBD in milligrams, and the batch test report. Hemp flower in the US must test at or below 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis. Burning flower makes tar and carbon monoxide. A cone changes the paper and the airflow. It does not change what combustion produces.
