Pick first
THCA for no high. Delta-9 THC for a high. The two compounds differ by one carboxyl group and by heat.
What the names mean
THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the form the plant builds. THC here means delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, the decarboxylated form. Heat removes CO2 from THCA and leaves THC. The mass loss is 12.3%, so 100 mg of THCA yields about 87.7 mg of THC.
Effects of THCA
THCA binds the CB1 receptor with low affinity. Human trials are few. User reports list mild nausea relief, less joint pain, and appetite change. Most reports note no euphoria. Inhaled THCA still converts to THC in the flame, so smoked THCA flower can produce a high. Raw THCA eaten as powder does not.
Effects of THC
THC binds CB1 with high affinity. Common effects: euphoria, slower time sense, dry mouth, red eyes, heart rate up 10 to 20 beats per minute, weaker short-term memory. Inhaled onset is 5 to 15 minutes, peak at 15 to 30 minutes, total duration of 2 to 4 hours. Oral onset is 30 to 90 minutes and duration of 4 to 8 hours.
Label math
Total THC equals delta-9 THC plus 0.877 times THCA. A flower label that lists 0.2% delta-9 THC and 22% THCA carries about 19.5% total THC. Federal hemp rules use the delta-9 number alone. Labs in some states report total THC. Read the certificate of analysis, not the front of the package.
Legal status
Federal hemp law sets the limit at 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. THCA sits outside that number until heat or a total THC test converts it. Several states have banned THCA sales. Check state rules before you buy.
Options
- THCA flower, for users who want the acid form without heat. Check the COA for total THC.
- State-licensed delta-9 THC products, for a measured high with the dose printed on the label.
- Full-spectrum CBD oil, for trace THC at or under 0.3% and no high.
- CBD isolate, for zero THC.
Drug tests
Tests screen for THC-COOH, a THC metabolite. Inhaled THCA converts to THC, so smoked THCA can trigger a positive result. CBD isolate carries no THC risk. Full-spectrum CBD can at high doses over weeks.
