THCA vs THC potency: the short answer

THCA is an acid. It does not produce a high in raw form. THC does. Heat removes a carboxyl group from THCA and leaves THC. The mass drops 12.3% because CO2 leaves. Multiply the THCA number by 0.877 to get the THC it can become.

Total THC = THC + (THCA × 0.877).

Example: a flower label reads 24% THCA and 0.9% THC. Total THC = 0.9 + (24 × 0.877) = 21.9%. A vape cart that reads 78% THC holds more THC per gram of oil than that flower holds per gram of plant. The flower label shows the larger number, but part of that number is an acid that needs heat.

Where the potency numbers come from

  • HPLC testing measures THCA and THC as separate peaks. Most state cannabis labs use this method.
  • GC testing heats the sample in the inlet. THCA converts to THC inside the machine, so the report shows one THC value.
  • A label that lists total THC applied the 0.877 factor. A label that lists THCA and THC as separate values did not.
  • Dose per serving matters more than percent. A 10 mg THC gummy is 10 mg. A 0.5 g joint of flower at 20% total THC holds 100 mg of THC. Combustion and inhale losses cut that figure.

Our pick

Pick: products that publish a full-panel COA with THCA and total THC on the same page

Reason: two numbers let you check the math and compare across formats. A COA without the acid number hides the conversion. A COA without total THC makes you do the math. Both values, a batch ID, and a test date are the standard to ask for.

thca vs thc potency

Options by format

Option 1: THCA flower

Labels on many batches show THCA in the 18% to 30% range. Convert before you compare. Raw use delivers little THC. Smoked or vaped use delivers the converted amount.

Option 2: THC vape cart

Labels show THC in the 70% to 90% range. No conversion needed. Dose control is harder because one pull is not a measured serving.

Option 3: THC edibles

Labels show mg per piece. This is the clearest potency number on the market. 10 mg per piece is the common unit in legal states.

Checklist before you buy

  1. Find the batch COA.
  2. Find THCA and THC as separate values.
  3. Compute total THC with the 0.877 factor.
  4. Check the lab name and the test date.

State law on THCA hemp differs. Some states cap total THC, some count delta-9 THC alone. Confirm the rule where you live. Ask the seller for the COA on the batch you receive.
